Fans of Vulcan XH558 are being invited to an evening of Cold War history and Falklands conflict reminiscences next month (September 29).

Operation Black Buck and Tales from the Cold War is a special evening event that will take place at the Ritz Cinema in Thirsk, offering attendees a unique opportunity to hear firsthand accounts from RAF veterans.

The event will feature two captivating talks on Tales from the Cold War from Wing Commander (ret) Adrian Sumner and Squadron Leader (ret) Mal Stainforth.

There will also be special guest appearances from Squadron Leader (ret) Martin Withers, Falklands Veteran and Captain of Vulcan XM607 during the Falklands' Raids and Squadron Leader (ret) Peter Odling, author of 'Higher and Higher: A Pilot's Story'

Squadron Leader Odling, now 89 years old, was a Chief Flying Instructor on Vulcans in the RAF, and his very first flight in a Vulcan was on-board XH558. In a heartwarming reunion this June, Peter was able to visit XH558 again, sharing stories with the Vulcan to the Sky Trust team and showing his log book from his flying days.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, Peter wrote his memoirs, 'Higher and Higher: A Pilot's Story'. Peter has generously offered the copyright to Vulcan to the Sky Trust.

Marc Walters, chief executive of Vulcan to the Sky Trust said: "It was fantastic to be able to reunite Peter with XH558 earlier this year. We are over the moon that he has gifted copyright of his book to the Trust and the first print run of 200 copies sold out very quickly.

“This will be a fantastic event for supporters of XH558 and anyone with an interest in the iconic Vulcan aircraft. Peter’s story is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Vulcan and its crews. We're thrilled to be able to share his book with a wider audience."

The evening will begin at 6:00 pm with a meet and greet, followed by a screening of "The Falklands' Most Daring Raid".

"This is a must-attend event for aviation enthusiasts, history buffs, and anyone interested in the Cold War era and the Falklands conflict," added Marc.
